The Protagonist

Winston Churchill: calling for a United States of Europe; European Commission

Winston Churchill, a former army officer, war reporter and British Prime Minister (1940-45 and 1951-55), was one of the first to call for the creation of a ‘United States of Europe’. Following the Second World War, he was convinced that only a united Europe could guarantee peace.

Winston Churchill and the Council of Europe

During the 1940s Winston Churchill was one of the main protagonists in a new regional organisation that was to become the Council of Europe. His speech to a crowd in Place Kléber, Strasbourg, on the occasion of the First Session of the Consultative Assembly was a big media event.

Winston Churchill and the European Union; David Ramiro Troitiño, Archil Chochia; Baltic Journal of Law & Politics; 2015; Volume 8; Issue 1; pp. 55-81

Given Winston Churchill’s influence and achievement as a writer, historian, adventurer, soldier, artist, and politician, his participation in the European integration process is crucial to understanding the entire scope of the project in its origins. Churchill was a fundamental voice promoting the Franco-British Union, a promoter of the European Communities, and an active participant of the Congress of Europe, embryo of the Council of Europe. This article analyzes Churchill’s view of European integration through his political speeches, in particular those delivered in Zurich and in The Hague (...).

The Rhetoric of Geopolitical Fiction in Churchill’s Iron Curtain Speech; Florian Andrei Vlad; Cultural Intertexts; 2019; Volume 9; Issue 9; pp. 209-219

An examination of the power of words, of the realm shared by fiction, poetry and political discourse, brings us to one of the most important common points linking the language of literature and its rhetoric, on the one hand, and the rhetoric of political discourse on the other: the consistent use of figurative language to appeal to the feelings of audiences. Most people would think, whether rightly or wrongly, of politics as relatively impure and manipulative and of literary language as elevated and enlightening. The emphasis in this text, a reconsideration of Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain Speech,” is not on the evaluation of the quality of the literary and political discourses, but on the devices used in the public space that heavily rely on what one usually calls fictional, literary, even poetical devices to create “extra-literary” effects.

Winston S. Churchill's legacy to the Royal Navy, 1911-1915; Maria S. Higgins; Naval War College Review; 1974; Volume 27; Issue 3; pp. 67–77

One of the ironies of military and naval history is that the men who are effective in building and providing for fleet readiness in peacetime are doomed to obscurity, while wartime leaders are acknowledged as heroes and assured of a niche in history. While Winston Churchill is well recognized for his part in World War II, the general naval community has little appreciation for the profound impact he had in initiating change in the Royal Navy prior to World War I.

The “Churchill factor” and its influence on the Brexit debate: Defining the Churchill myth; Alma-Pierre Bonnet; Observatoire de la société britannique; 2020; Volume 25; pp. 65-86

(...) This paper aims to discuss the way Churchill and his image have shaped Brexit. Churchill’s overbearing shadow, what we might call “the Churchill myth”, seems to have pervaded the Brexit debate as the result of the fateful referendum can be interpreted, in part, as Britain’s inability to come to terms with her glorious past. I will first define the Churchill myth to see that it fitted perfectly with the way Brexiters campaigned in the 2016 referendum.

British parliamentary attitudes towards a supranational parliament and the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe, 1948–49; Teemu Häkkinen; Parliaments, Estates and Representation; 2018; Volume 38; Issue 1; pp. 63-75

With a mounting communist threat from Eastern Europe after the Second World War, in Western Europe an attempt was made to create permanent structures not only to help in facilitating cooperation in different fields of life to rebuild societies, but to launch a common European supranational parliamentary body. The creation of the Council of Europe in May 1949 proved to be a compromise. It lacked a workable European parliament, as had been the vision of certain federalists in many Western European countries.

The End of WWII and the Division of Europe; Center for European Studies, a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence

Despite their wartime alliance, tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States and Great Britain intensified rapidly as the war came to a close and the leaders discussed what to do with Germany.  Post-war negotiations took place at two conferences in 1945, one before the official end of the war, and one after. These conferences set the stage for the beginning of the Cold War and of a divided Europe.

An Exhibition at Hillsdale College - Virtual Tour

Winston Churchill began his hobby of painting at 40 years old. For Churchill, the art of painting—like the art of statesmanship, is mastered only when all of the intricate details involved aim toward a fixed purpose, or in Churchill’s words, “a single unity of conception.” Both arts, if done well, are guided by and reflect timeless principles.

House of European History

Rebulding a devided continent  - Permanent Exhibition

The period after 1945: Europe is in ruins, disempowered and divided between two opposing global forces, the United States of America and the Soviet Union. United by fear of Communism, some Western European countries began the path of co-operation at a supranational level in order to tame nationalism and dismantle the risk of war. In Eastern Europe however, liberation for many meant the replacement of Nazi tyranny by Communist dictatorship under Soviet control.
